Default Egr?

Well, got the carb on and fixed an electrical prob. But it only runs with the choke pulled out. Does this have anything to do with the fact I dont have an air cleaner on and the egr is just blowing out the bolt holes? Has anyone capped these bolts off? Or is my problem something else?

i know its a carb model but still.
and this EGR thingy ??
them bolt holes act as the motors breather system, plug them and you will blow out all your motor gaskets

Its a 99 Sporty 1200. Mikuni HSR 42 carb. I just thought it was like the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system on a car. They take "unspent" gasses from the engine and put them back into the intake. Its supposed to help emmisions and give better gas mileage. A lot of people cap them off in cars and lets them just go out the tail pipes. I would assume it works the same way in this engine...

Ok, well i guess it is a breather system...just thought it was a EGR system based on how it was set up. So this choke issue, does it mean that my carb is way too lean?

I would check for an intake leak first. It's messy but spray some penatraiting oil around the carb hookup and see if rpm's change. You can also hold something over the carb to cut off some of the air, if this lets it run or changes the rpm it's an air leak around the carb gaskets. Hope that helps. Ride safe.

Also what size jets do you have in the carb? And what kind of aftermarket exhaust and air cleaner are you running? Is bowl float level correct? +1 on the intake leak. there are many things that can cause that condition.. You can spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around the intake and it won't leave any residue like penetrating oil to check for intake leak. Ck vacuum hoses too..
