Default clunking noise from front end...

Last season I was in an accident where a guy cut me off doing a U-turn and I t-boned him. The front end was bent, but everything was replaced. The first ride back from the dealer I noticed some clunking noise when hitting bumps, but I had never heard that particular type of noise before. It's definitely not the bottoming out sound (nightster), it's something more "clunky". I hear the noise even on little bumps every once and a while and it's driving me crazy!

I took it back to the dealer and they checked everything and said there's nothing wrong. They said originally my fender was hitting my horn, but i took my fender off and still hear that noise.

According to my dealer, with my new broomstick straight bars installed, my new riding position changed the geometry of the bike and now it makes that noise. Is that a load of crap or is there ANY sense to that statement??

Check everything on the front. Headlight on secure etc. If you took it to a dealer I can just about guarantee they didn't take the forks apart and check them. Find an independent shop. Harley shops are good for putting on bolt-on chrome and not much else these days. Don't wanna get grease on those nice H-D shop shirts.

after the accident I asked for all my scrap parts back. I got two fork legs and one fork tube which leads me to believe they re-built the front end using some old and some new parts. Do you think there's a chance that they messed up the re-assembly of the front end and that there's something clunking around in there? It sounds like it's coming from the top of the fork tubes. Everything (headlight, risers, speedo ect.) is bolted down securely. The dealer said it may be the bearings but they checked that and said they were fine.

I am not much help, but like mentioned before, check the headlight, even take out the bulb and look inside if need be. and try hitting the brakes and see if the shocks are bottoming out. if you can find a bike jack, jack it up and wiggle everything on the front end. The drag bars have nothing to do with it and for christ's sake, find another dealer, these guys are a joke!!!

PS. Don't try taking the forks apart, leave that for guys who know how to do it.

yea i wouldn't mess around with the forks. I'm going to be installing the progressive springs in the front so when I have that done i'll get them to inspect the suspension.

I knew blaming it on the bar set up was a bullsh@t explanation. It doesn't even make sense! I've got to figure out this clunking though... it's making my rides less enjoyable even though it's just a sound!

Man, I woulda called that guy out. "Howabout explaining the changes in geometry and how that would cause a clunking noise?"

Is it like a thin chunk or a deep clunk?
