Ok here is my dilema, I get both these bikes for the same price, here they are
2003 Harley Davidson 1200c with 9200 miles, anniversary paint, mini apes, drag pipes and an extra seat
2004 HD 883c with 6400 miles, two seats, sissy bar and mostly stock otherwise.
Is the rubber mounted motor and wider rear tire better than the 03? I would much rather have a 1200 over the 883 to start with. I do like the larger tank on the 04 but the anniversary 03 3.3 gallon tank doesnt look bad either. Both bikes van be had for 4500-4600.
Is either bike bigger than the other> I havent been able to sit back to back between an 03 and 04 and up so i cant tell if one is better than the other. How much more power is there between a 883 and a 1200 is it very noticable?
I have not ridden a pre-2004 Sportster but hear that the vibrations at high speed can be annoying. I believe there were quite a few changes to the bikes in 2004. I'm sure someone else can chime in on this.
I ride an 02 with solid motor mounts, but have not ridden a sporty with the rubber mounts. All I can say is that the vibrations are not bad at all, some swear by the rubber mounts, but its a harley not a honda. If you don't want to feel it, ride a shadow. What I would say is get the bike that you like the most. I would not make the motor mounts your deciding factor. Not disrespecting the rubber mounts by any means, but there should be more important factors at play here IMHO.
Well the first thing I noticed was that the 1200 has more mods done to it already than the 883. A lot of people like doing there own mods, but the bike that is pretty much stock is the same price as the one with mods so starting stock wouldn't be any cheaper. I would say go with the 03 1200, just because its a 1200, and if you decide to swap out some of the aftermarket stuff that is on it already for your own mods it would be a lot easier and more profitable to sell those parts.
Wow that's really wordy... Hope people understand it...
Go with the 1200. I was having the same dilema, but figured if I never rode a rubeer-mount would I feel as if something was missing when I rode my solid mount. The answer is no. The vibrations are not bad at all I don't know what all the complaining is about. Also, think about how much you would be spending to make the stock 883 look like the 1200. Conversions, air, pipes, forward controls etc etc. That a lot of cash.
