Default air cleaner/mapping question

Hey guys…first time poster…Been visiting the site for a while…good information on here. Anyway, here is the deal. At 42, I have decided to get back into biking. I have owned Harleys and sport bikes in the past. I am thinking about starting off with a Nightster for my birthday in a couple of weeks. Dealer has one in vivid black and I am about to pull the trigger. Killer looking bike. I figure I’ll start with the Nightster, get back into riding and then consider taking advantage of the factory trade in program later if I want to move to a bigger bike. My guess is that I’ll be a happy Nightster owner for a long time to come.

So here is my question….Like everyone else, I am planning to make the bike mine as soon as I wheel it in the garage. What I am not sure of is the whole air cleaner/pipes/mapping thing. I am planning to switch the pipes and would like to go with a new air cleaner….the air cleaner would be more for looks than for performance. That said, what determines if I need to remap the bike? Do you have to do that anytime you change? If so, what is the reasoning behind it?

Thanks guys!

When you change the air cleaner from the stock one you will need to do a re-map or buy an air fuel controler like the Power Commander or the Fuel Pack (there are many more to choose from but these are the 2 most common).

Not really required, but to take full advantage of stage one,you should get a remap from the dealer or a piggy back fuel processer.

if you are just changing pipes the o2 sensors will compensate. but if you change your air cleaner you'll just lean your bike out more(and they are really lean from the factory as it is). imo, a remap is not a recommendation, but more a necessity. excess heat, due to lean situations, causes valves to burn up, chrome exhaust to discolor(bluing), etc. tuning is not just for performance, but more so to make sure your air/fuel ratio is correct.
