Default engine i.d.

I bought a sporty that according to the V.I.N. is a 2006 883 standard. It has had custom work and now has a black & chrome 1200 engine. My question, is there any identification on the engine that will show the year model of the engine or if it started life as a 1200 or maybe an 883 custom that has been reworked? Thanks, Mike

Left side of engine, below cylinders on the "block" their is a number stamped. Take that number to your dealer and they should be able to tell you what you have.

That number should match the VIN on the frame. If it doesn't, you could have legal problems unless you have paperwork showing you own the motor as well as the bike.

This is true...If this is indeed the case, and before the 5-0 starts knockin down your door, I would give the bike to me and I'll take the heat for it.

after some reading it sounds like the number on the engine is an abbreviated vin...ill have to check it out.
