Default advice needed

just got a 97 883 that is pretty much stock. i am wondering which direction is the best to go, screaming air filter or some other filter with the back plate modded?it came with 2 sets of pipes(one with baffles, the other without) put the drag pipes on and now sounds like it should. doesnt run bad but you can tell a lil off.is it good to shim the needles and go up 1 size with jets when changing air filter?opinions please....

on my neighbor's '97 883 when he got it it ran like smashedass...after a SE air cleaner, pipes w/o baffles and a dynajet kit it runs great...after we did the work i wasn't expecting much and twisted the wick pretty hard and slid right off the solo seat...now it's a totally different bike

I own and ride a 1999 XL883 and I have the SE air cleaner on it. When I bought the bike it had Drag pipes on it and I liked the look and the sound but I changed them to a 2 into 1 set up for the extra horse power alone. Don’t listen to the parts counter guys at the dealer. Most are not experienced mechanics and many times they just want to up sell you and get you to buy unnecessary stuff. There are many good air cleaners out there that do a good job. I just picked up the SE air cleaner because I got a good deal on it. What you NEED to do after you put on your new air cleaner is to re-jet your carb and to do that you need to RIDE the bike and CHECK out the condition of the sparkplugs. This is the BEST way to know how your new air cleaner and exhaust pipe combination is working. You will know in what direction to change the carb jets to, either richer or leaner, depending on the color of the Sparkplugs. Good luck and ride safe!

The absolute best way to improve a '97 883 is to jack it up and roll a 2010 Iron under it.

That's my opinion.
