Im new to all this and have run into an issue and really could use some help.
I just purchases a new windshield for my 05 883 XL. I was in the process of moving the clutch cable as stated in the set up. Seemed pretty simple following the directions. After tightening up the clutch cable with the adjuster bold and lock nut I seem that I cant get my clutch to engage. I have tried with the 1/16 gap as recommended, tighter, and looser with the same effect. Each time i have tried to start the bike it wants to take off. Do I need to find neutral and let it run for a while and build the fluids up? Did i accidently twist the cable or something? I just cant seem to figure out what in the world I have done wrong. I have now went through the set up probably 10 times with the same effect. Please help.
I could print and fax you the page(s) from the Clymer manual if you'd like. It's not that difficult, but a picture (or pictures) is worth a thousand words.
that would be great anything to help. I have the owner manual and I have walked through all the steps time and time again. My big concern is that with the bike off and the clutch pulled I cant move it which is telling me the clutch is still engaged.
what do you mean the bike wants to take off when you try to start? Are you trying to start while in gear??? Always start in neutral. Sometimes clutch drag from oil can be enough it can cause the bike to roll a bit if started in gear. So like I said, always start in nuetral, alot of the drag issue clears up once the clutch starts spinning fling oil out of it. But also go over your clutch adjustment once again, just to make sure you did everything properly.
I ran into a similar problem when installing my fwd controls. I thought i had messed something up. Put the gap the way it should be (like you said you have) start it in nuetral then try it. You shouldnt have any problems then. I spent hours thinking I had messed something up when I hadnt.
