I'm in the final phase of my bike shopping and I just want to be as informed as I can before I show up at the dealerships to pick a bike that may or may not be used... In terms of used bikes.... specifically sportsters 2007 and up....
What tends to go wrong with the bikes?? oil leaks? gaskets? pistons?? What seems to break down first or the most on these bikes??
Since i have been on this forum for a while the thing you hear about the most is eletrical and fuel / air mixture issues. as far as major engine problems not to often. Just make sure when you buy you also get a service manual and you will save yourself a lot of head ache. you might even get the dealer to give you one at the time of purchase. when you get the bike just maintane the bike with proper services and you shouldn't have problems.
I have an 2007 XL883 and a 2007 XL1200L Low and I haven't had a single problem with either bike so far. I did a 1,000 mile round trip on the '07 XL883 over one weekend about 6 months ago and another almost 700 mile round trip on it about one week later. I also did the same 700 mile round trip on the '07 XL1200L about a month ago too! I think that they are both GREAT bikes! SPORTSTERS RULE!
07 with 20K miles on it. Leaking rocker cover only major problem. There has been at least one recall to change / relocate the regulator for some VINs on 07s. It was too big and could be hit by the front fender.
I haven't had this problem, but some people have reported corosion to fuses and relays.
