Default electrical problem

hi all,

I have a 99 sportster 1200. I bought the bike new in 99. My problem is as follows:

I was riding on a small highway near my house. My spedo and tach bracket cracked and the speedo and tach fell down unto the headlight. No big deal. The bracket is the aftermarket harley chrome bracket. It was mounted on the front two allen screws holding on the handbars.

Now the speedo is dead. No backlight and it always reads 50 mph. The turn signals and breaklight doesn't work either. The tach works fine as well as the headlight low/high and the running lights(front turn signal bulbs). I'm at a loss for the moment. I checked the wires for grounding/breaks/etc... Everything looks fine.

Any help or tests to try would be appreciated.

Thanks alot for your time!

Mark

Default RE: electrical problem

I just got a '97 sportster 1200 and it is having that exact same problem. But every once in a while it will stop and the speedometer will work, the turn signals and brake lights will work. But it is literally the exact same problem, the running lights work but no turn signals and no brake lights, but like you said, the tach works.

I'm thinking its just a loose cable somewhere, i looked at the service manual and i'm thinking its the junction between where the cables from the controls on the handlebars connect to the cable that takes them back to the electronics systems under the seat.

Let me know if you fixed this problem, i havent had a chance to really get my hands dirty yet and any opinions would be of great help.
