New to forum and HD. Just bought a '05 1200C with 270 ml. on it.Previous owner got sick and didn't ride it so the neighbor would fire it up and ride it around the block for her. I've put 2k on it in the last 2 mo. First 1000 pretty conservatively. My ? is, it uses oil. Alot. Have to add 5 or 6 oz. every 200 miles. Is this normal, are rings seated yet. No leaks and no smoke. Any ideas? Thanks, Jeff
You did not indicate if you are trying to maintain the oil level to the "full" level or above the "fill" level. Assuming you are taking it to full, try maintaining the oil level 1/4 above the fill level and see if it maintains there. You may also be noticing some oil dripping from the AC?
05 models have a known issue with a bad valve seals and the MoCo (was) replacing them under a Service Bulletin. I don't know whether they will still honor the "no cost" replacement after this long though.
A quick check for leaking valve seals is to, while on the jiffy stand and in neutral, give the throttle a hard rev and then quickly slam the throttle closed. As the motor winds down look for any wisps of smoke from the exhaust pipes. If you see any smoke the valve seals are leaking.
