Default Carb help

My bike starts and idles fine, but when I give it gas it sputters and wants to die. Any suggestions? I plan on pulling the carb out and inspecting it. Anything I should be looking for? The silver collar that fell out of the main jet tube I may have put in upside down. Does it go a certain way?

Ok, I'll be more specific. The silver thing I found only fits one way properly. It idles fine. If I SLOWLY give it throttle it's ok. If I crack it open as you would normally ride it, it chugs and wants to die. Any suggestions? I don't want to go to the dealer, I will buy a new carb before I do that.

Go to the DIY section - Fuel/Carb related and you'll find some great articles with pics about what you need to do to the jetting of the CV carb and how to tune it.

If the bike feels sluggish on accel then starts pulling the mixture is fat/rich also it may die/cough on a blip. The silver thing in the main jet has a offset that should be pointing down, also it is flat on the bottom and concave on the top seen by looking through the throat. If the bike idles poorly but doesn't die when you close the mixture screw the slow jet is correct/close. If you changed the needle (some use the 88XLH in rejet n65c) return to stock. If you changed the main jet make sure you only went up by one size then ride again and but set the mixture out 2 1/2 as a close setting. Now if you now have 45 slow 180 main and stock needle it should be close (1200). Relpace and check your plugs for signs of lean (white electrode) or rich/fat (slightly brown to black). You can adjust the mixture to fine tune one way or the other. If then you have the adjustable needle (in the dyno kit) you can lift the clip (leans out) or drop the needle clip (richens/fattens out). If you have the stock needle you can add small washers to richen the mixture (by lifting the needle- same as dropping the needle clip) the idle should be somewhere around 850-900 +- for best sound and provides the oiling system ample operation. I'm still tinkering with my 1200R to get it right on. Take your time and watch out and don't preferate the diaphram for the needle vaccum. All this is trial and error good luck and let us know.

I have torn it apart and reassembeled now 3 times. All I can think of is my float is out of adjustment. Can't find any info on that.

Check the diaphram. Sounds like a classic case of torn/not seated properly. Take off top cover and inspect it closely.

It idles fine, but if I give it gas is chugs and dies. Everything was fine, but I had to take off my tank to get the turn signals off. After dropping the tank and scratching it up, I set it down in the grass. I ended up getting debris in the petcock opening so it wouldn't feed gas to the carb. Got that cleared out then this. I don't think anything got in the carb, I checked it for abstruction. My little brother did tap on the float assembly, (I about cut his hand off)! It was fine as far as jet size before, something is out of adjustment.

If you didn't tinker with the top of the carb that should be Ok. Tell us what you have done to the carb for the rejet and what kind of scoot.

I drilled out the aluminum plug, closed the screw, opened it 2 turns. I put in the 45 pilot jet. I put in the 175 main jet. I made sure the rod was in the bellows for the accelerator pump. It ran perfect for 2 weeks, but now after removing my tank to take off my turn signals, it idles fine but any throttle imput causes it to chug then die. I screwed something up thats for sure. The top part of the carb is the only thing I haven't messed with.
