Well, my '04 Sporty is in for it's 1k tune up and oil change. He didn't tell me exactly what all they will do (he told me the basics) because he said they do too much to list, but I've heard it's about a 39-pt inspection.
Does anyone happen to have that list or know what all they look for specifically?
I'm just afraid they're going to come back and say that I need this for $xx.xx and also this for $yy.yy, etc. Has anyone had that happen to them? Go in expecting to pay $270 (240 +30 for synth) and come out with a $500 bill or higher?
I know the 30$ upgrade to synth is worth it. With 100 - 104 degree weather here in Tx, the bike needs it!
I feel you are wasting your money. The service manual is $50-60 depending on the dealer.Everything they do you can do by yourself with basic inch based tools. They will only see my bike if there is a warranty issue. It's too late for you now but an oil change takes about 15 minutes if you are not in a hurry.I tell the parts manager what is wrong and he gives me the part and I do it myself and take the bad part back to him.Adjusting the primary is under 5 minutes. You could do a complete 1000k service in front of your house in under two hours. This is my opinion.however if you are not mechanically inclined maybe the dealer is your best option.
My 1K service was GREAT! EVERYTHING was tightened, realigned, and adjusted and it came back to me better than the day I drove it away with 0.6 miles on it! No sales pitches, no "you need this" crap, just a very satisfying service experience.
'04 Sporty in for its 1K service? You must never ride that thing! [8D]
I changed my oil at 1000mi and switched to Syntec Blend. Everything on the bike's good right now, I'll be waiting till either the end of the season or 2500-3000mi to bring it in for the 1k mi service.

Actually, I bought it used in the same condition that you see it (with all of the chrome add ons, etc), and with only 240 miles on it! I've put over 800 on it myself within the first couple of weeks.
Well the results are in from my 1k service tune-up. (btw - this is an '04 that I bought used with only 240 miles on it. That's the reason for the low mileage. I've already added over 800 'easy' miles myself).
I can tell they adjusted the idle some because it now sits and idles just like a harley should! Sounds MUCH better than before. (That took a while to get use to, bc I kept thinking it was going to die out.)
Let's see, for a total of $243 with tax, they did a few things to it according to the invoice sheet that I would HAVE not known to do myself (even though I wonder what all they REALLY did or didn't do). 1
Also, after a day or so of riding, I feel the synthetic oil has now reached everywhere it's suppose to and it really shifts better. Doesn't seem to have quite as many "thunks" when going from N to 1st. That was definitely worth the extra $. The only thing I meant to ask for was a bigger oil filter- oh well.
The clutch level seems a lot easier to pull in which is nice, and the throttle seems to be a little easier to "roll on and off" as well. The invoice states they replaced a clutch cover gasket, an inspection cover gasket (?), two o-rings (didn't say where) and of course the oil filter with an oil change.
They also polished it all up for me, which was nice. They also seemed to have buffed out some of the slight scratch marks that I had in the clear coat on my tank.
Other than that, the bike definitely seems to be better, so I'm glad I had them do it. Maybe on the third or fourth bike that I end up owning I'll start doing all of that stuff myself.
glad to hear your service went well.i understand some folks reluctance to having the dealer do there service, but for me it was a know brainer.let them do it that way there is no way there can be a controversy on warrenty.just my thoughts.
Glad things went well. I just wish I could stay there for the day and watch what they do. That way I can verify that the work is actually being done, and hopefully learn something to boot.
