Is this just the nature of these bikes to be so cold blooded? This is my wifes bike that we bought used with 7500 miles on it. The first time we did a long ride the bike would load up at lower speeds, start belching black smoke and eventually die several times. I took the bike to a well respected local shop. He suggested doing the Stage 1 upgrade which basically included the new air kit, jetting etc. He also removed the baffles in the stock pipes. Pretty typical stuff. The bike runs very good now but as before it takes for ever for it to warm up and idle properly. I know it's a carbed bike but I have had carbed bikes in the past and didn't have this trouble. Any suggestions, or is that the way it is?
How long is a long time? Could be a number of things is happening. To start my bike, I pump the throttle wide open a couple times, open the choke all the way, and it starts right up, then I let it run for about 2-3 minutes, then go down to half choke and take off. About a mile later I am good to run off choke.
You may also check your idle air screw, see if its set right. Could have to do with both running cold, and loading up at low rpms, sounds like it may be set a bit too rich.
It takes about 15 minutes for the bike to warm up and run right. I think he said he set the a/f screw out 2.5 turns. I think he used a small drill bit on the pilot jet and not sure which main jet he put in. These were Factory Screaming Eagle parts and I watched him do the work. After the Stage 1 was done it doesn't load up any more but it doesn't want to idle until after about 15 minutes of run time.

Same method with my '05 Custom, just cold natured...
Last year I had tons of carb problems. Thats actually what led me to this site. Long story short, I had jets that were too big for the bike. The air screw was all messed up. I'd be lying if I told you what jets I'm running now, but what I can tell you is that its the ones that come with the SE intake. My local indie told me two turns out on the air screw. Thats when it ran like crap. The HD shop told me three and a half. Thats where shes been since last winter. It runs great! Oh sure, its cold natured but thats the nature of the beast. My dad had a 95 Sportster and it had an S nad S carb on it. It always started. It would make me so damned mad. Some guys I know tell me how much better the S and S is and it might be. I dont know. But I do know his always started when mine wouldnt. Whenever I need a new carb, thats what I'll go with. Im sure its like everything else. Opinions right?
Sounds like something isnt right with yours. I've got an '05 and although when it gets into the 40's it might be a little difficult to start, once it gets going, I've got no problems. My carb is jetted with the DynoJet kit from Harley. Not sure which jets are in there but I am very happy with it overall.
I have a 09 Custom XL1200c. In the cold, it starts up and I let it idle for 45 sec to 1 minute then it will shut off. Start it back up, let it idle for 30 sec, and it'll shut off. I just started giving it a little throttle and keeping it there for like a 30 sec. to 1 minute, then it is alright. I'm not really mechanically smart, so I'm not sure why it would run 45 sec, then shut down when I originally start it up. It just started this in cool weather. It has a 1000 miles to go till I get my next service. I had put stabil in it. Hey, this is my first Harley, I'm just learning
if your indy drilled out yor pilot jet he may have reamed it to big, its always best to just upsize usign a proper jet, not drilling out the original jet. that may be a good place to start. i would recomend properly re-setting the idle air mixture * needs to be done witht the bike at operating temps*
