Gear box lock up
Hi, yesterday my 1996 1200 custom locked up the gear box. The primary chain partially derailed and broke 3 lugs off 4th gear on the main shaft. I was doin about 50Km/H and just changed into 4th when everything locked up.
Has anyone ever had a similar thing happen???
Not knowing why this happened is the main worry at this time.

I have seen similar damage from the bike being over rev while the guy was trying to race going down the street and missed a gear.The parts had about 35,000 miles on them and I think the primary chain lost tension and it all went down the toilet from there.

Thanks Flying. My first thought was the chain tensioner but when the primary cover was removed the tensioner seemed to be working OK. I have a Hayden Enterprises auto adjusting tensioner fitted. Lucky 4 me I was not going fast.

Yep, it happened in my Ironhead. I was pulling away from a traffic light and shifting from 2nd to 3rd. She locked up tighter than a drum and I skidded to a stop. Ended up being a tooth breaking off of 2nd and jamming up the works. My mainshaft was bent like a banana.
