I have a 98 883 w/ the 1200 conversion, andrews cam. I purchased the bike this way. It has the stock oval air cleaner on it. The AN stage 1, 2 look sweet but are dam expensive. Is there a noticeable performance difference with these vs. stock?
It's an interesting question...I assume you meant K&N Stage I and II right?????
Remember that the first component of combustion in your motor is the air intake!!! Most K&N setups "promise" a measurable increase in horsepower. A stock cleaner is NOT going to be ideal to maximize any upgrades that have been made to your motor!
Free up the air flow, check your map and ride it like you stole it!!!!!!!!

Are youu sure it has the stock air cleaner? I can't imagine that the previous owner would do the 1200 conversion, including cam replacement, and still have the stock air cleaner. The Screamin Eagle air cleaner uses the stock "Ham Can" cover, but is a free flowing air cleaner. Possibly that is what you have??
IMHO upgrading your air cleaner system/element is crucial for performance. Pull the cover off and see if (as SportyPig suggested) it is an upgraded S/E Stage I intake with the stock cover.
I have NEVER been fond of the look of the football intake covers...just my $0.02
Just put the Screamin Eagle Heavey Breather on the Sporty 883 and did the jets what a difference it made seemed to give it a good deal more ***** ! Either that or it was the 25lbs I lost
When I got my Sporty, I did the jets, stage 1 HD SE air cleaner and D & D exaust. That was in 05. Just two weeks ago I put the K & N filter replacement in. MUCH smoother anf noticeable pep in the throttle! I can't reccommend anything better for breathing!
Are there any problems riding in hard rain with the big sucker, heavy breather or similar air cleaners with an open element?
You want to avoid excessive water intake in an air intake! My Wimmer came with a nylon "sock" that you I slip over the element (which is completely exposed) when it gets raining pretty hard. I keep it with my rain gear and as a rule of thumb, if it's raining enough to put on a weather suit then it's raining enough to cover up the air cleaner!!!
PS...I have the Wimmer setup on my carbed Sporty as well as on my '04 Road King which is a fuelie. It bolts right on to the Screamin' Eagle Stage I setup.

I am positive because i have the receipts and a stock 883 to compare it too. Night and day difference performance wise. The air cleaner is bone stock as it sits.
