Default Myth or fact.

My friend just got a new 883. He asked the dealer about putting slip on mufflers. Dealer told him you have to do a race set up and some other things cost about $1000. Is this true? They have to change the computer settings. You can't just put slip on muffler and not have any problems. Wants to keep the cost down right now. Thanks in advance.

The answer he got is wrong. I have Cycle Shack slip on mufflers I put on my '07 883L. They work and sound great and do not need any other changes to the bike. I did it myself in less than an hour.

I have heard from over on the XLForums that the new 09 and 10s have different fuel maps with less compensation than the 07 and 08 models. The newer maps run much leaner than the old. So what he is saying might be some what factual. The have dynoed bikes with slip-ons stock a/c with no tune and the afr is in the 16:1 range. That is a dangerously lean afr.

But usually people just put slip-ons on with no problems.

yes, you can put just the slip ons on
no, the shop doesnt need to do it you'll need a screw driver, some sockets, and a rubber mallet
yes, the bike will run a lil lean also you'll lose a lil bottom end torque

truth be told i ran some rush slip ons for awhile with no problem just a lil "flat" on the bottom end of the torque curve.. tell him to put them on ride for the summer save some money this fall/winter and buy an intake/breather and get it remapped??

I would say this theory is very plausible.

Help your friend mount the pipes and he'll save a lot of money, then he can get the fuel mapping done at the dealer.
