Question Oil Change Question

Hi folks. Did my first oil change today and initially had a problem with the Derby cover gasket. I could not get it to stay in the seat that goes around the opening. Eventually, I put enough oil on it to cause it to stick. Will that be a problem? I am hoping it will not.

IMO it's easier to refill the tranny thru the inspection cover, rather than remove the derby cover.

On my first bike, the derby screws were always a pain to remove - broken sockets, stripped screw heads, etc...

I don't have the same problem with this bike, but I see no need to remove the derby cover for an oil change.

I only take it off if I'm adjusting the clutch.

Just keep an eye on it for a while and make sure there aren't any leaks...

Only time I remove the Derby Cover is if I am checking the clutch adjustment.

When changing the tranny/primary oil on a Sportster I just drain it and pour in 1 quart of whatever you want to use through the primary chain inspection cover.

Easier to fill, darn near impossible to check.

Thanks everyone. It was my first time, so I followed the manual. Considering how one quart of oil filled it perfectly, I will probably use the inspection cover from here on out.

That's true, but a quart usually does it.

those gaskets go back on easily if you rub some white lithium or axle grease on them. They will sit right down in the groove and stay til you get it on. WOn't hurt a thing...

I must have a one in a million bike because I adjust the clutch every oil change and have never had a problem with the gasket.

I think the gasket change is just a suggestion in the manual. Doesn't mean it was bad really...

I changed mine for the first time last week, I took the advise of the guys here, drained the oil and put back in a quart of 75/90 mobile 1 through the inspection cover.
