Hi folks. Did my first oil change today and initially had a problem with the Derby cover gasket. I could not get it to stay in the seat that goes around the opening. Eventually, I put enough oil on it to cause it to stick. Will that be a problem? I am hoping it will not.
Just keep an eye on it for a while and make sure there aren't any leaks...
Only time I remove the Derby Cover is if I am checking the clutch adjustment.
When changing the tranny/primary oil on a Sportster I just drain it and pour in 1 quart of whatever you want to use through the primary chain inspection cover.
Thanks everyone. It was my first time, so I followed the manual. Considering how one quart of oil filled it perfectly, I will probably use the inspection cover from here on out.
those gaskets go back on easily if you rub some white lithium or axle grease on them. They will sit right down in the groove and stay til you get it on. WOn't hurt a thing...
I changed mine for the first time last week, I took the advise of the guys here, drained the oil and put back in a quart of 75/90 mobile 1 through the inspection cover.
