Default Pipe wrap

So I removed the chrome heat shields, and wrapped the pipes. I was under the impression that the heat wrap would serve the same function as the heat shields. Apparently not, as my pipes are hot as he**. In fact, it set my jeans on fire; so is this normal? Did I miss a memo, or did Harley do something terribly wrong on the instal?

Not like burst into flames, mind you, but yeah caught fire and burned a hole right in 'em. Also burned the boot a bit. So like I said, either I missed a memo, or there was a step left out on the instal.

If you followed the directions & only overlaped 1/4-1/8" then you missed the memo that exhaust gasses are 1200-2000*F and no thin layer of fabric will stop the heat, especially of a lean fuel-infected HD engine.
Leather pants of chaps help insulate you from the heat & don't burn easily.

Unfortunately, I can't post any pics, I'm deployed to Afghanistan. This was something I had done over R&R, so I was wondering if the job had been rushed. I will be posting up pics when I get back in about a month-ish.

Stephan, as far as I know the overlap is about what you mention. So everyone with wrapped pipes just deals with this? Man that's a little disappointing.

Untill recently the wrap was not the "cool" thing to do. Nobody knows about the long term weathering time effects such as corrosion under the wrap either.

so i am just getting ready to do this... so are you guys saying it is better to go with more them a 1/4- 1/8" overlay? the kit i order from summit comes with 2-50' rolls so i will have more then enough wrap. i could even double wrap them. so my question is, is putting more wrap on better or worse?

Technicaly worse as the increased heat can deteriorate the pipe metal.

I'm doing a guinea pig test by putting a heat shield on over the heat wrap. Daytime temps are still arround 60*F, getting hot pipes does not always happen. Looks rather back woods redneck ugly but it hides the odd metal zip tie places where the wrap reversed on the rear Thunderheader pipe. I might get pics someday I borrow some digital thingy.
