I don't know why, but maybe the dealer wants to know if you are the true owner of the bike before he makes a key for you. Reason being I received a e-mail recently telling of the latest methods thieves are using to steal your car or perhaps your bike. They are stealing the vin number off your vehicle and having a duplicate key made at wherever I guess just from that info. Then they just walk right up and put the key in the vehicle and drive off and nobody is the wiser. I'm just saying.
That would be true if you don't already have a key in hand. But if I have a key and I'm only asking for a spare, duplicate copy, theft is not an issue. If I was wanting to steal something, I could use the key I already had.
Simple common sense, have a COPY(s) made before you loose your last key.

Of course that is right charley. Just seen that on the internet the other day and tossed it out there for general info consumption.
A guy in the service department at my HD Dealership told me, when I first bought my bike, the first thing to do was ride up the road about 500 feet to a particular locksmith who cuts Harley keys. He said to make 1-2 more and put them in different places so you'll always have one when you need it. It was a great idea and only cost me $4 for 2 keys and the locksmith had me check them before I pulled out of his lot for fit. Now if I can just remember where the heck I put those for when I need 'em...
My dealer said to bring him $25 and the title and he would order me a key. My switch is bad, it goes all the way around, weird stuff. Need to get a new switch. Is there any place better than others to get a new switch? 99 Sporty here, switch now on console on fat bob tank. Thanx in advance, RD>
