Default New Member, New 09 Nightser, rust on delivery?

Hi everyone, new member here. Just bought my first bike last monday, and it was delivered on Wednesday. I bought a brand new 2009 Nightster. The dealership I delt with didn't have one, so they traded another dealership for the bike that I wanted. When my bike was delivered to me on Wednesday I was too excited to notice anything other than how beautiful it looked.

Well on Friday as I was giving it a good look over before preparing to ride, I noticed a little bit of what looked to be rust inside the well where the bolt connects the frame and swing arm. The little bit of rust looked superficial so while I was concerned, I didn't pay it much mind. Well yesterday, I found more little spots of rust underneath the bike as well. Most of it looks fairly superficial and came off with a good wipe from what I could tell, but there is still some in the wells of screws.

I'm just curious if this is a common thing and the best way to get rid of it, or if I got screwed and should be getting back in touch with my dealership to have them fix the bike since it was brand new with 1.3 miles on it when it was delivered. Thanks in advance for help!

Matt

It sounds like the bike was washed and not dried. Rust is caused by water and you can not stop it. You can however slow it down by keeping it out of the weather. This bike was probably stored outside but under a canopy, thus causing the rust. Look the bike over to make sure nothing is rusted bad, clean it up and keep it inside and you should not have any problems. ut I would also ride the bike to the dealer to let them see what is happening in case of future problems. Maybe they will offer a solution.
Either way, be nice to the and you will get more than going down there with an attitude.

If it was used, I would say to do what you can to keep it at bay. Since it was new, I think I would be taking it back and asking what they will do to make it right. Once started, rust can be hard to deal with. I've read some other posts where a few guys have had some issues. While not common, it does happen on occasion.

Since it is new and under warranty, don't try your own solutions. It may make it worse. Get the dealer to resolve it. Before you take it back, really give it the once over and look for any places where the paint is bubbling up. That could be more rust that hasn't come to the surface.

Do they not PDI the bike? It would wind me up more that the dealer had not cleaned it off before delivery. That would be my Beef. That said its a harley and unlike other bikes they are made of metal and stuff that rusts!
I find S100 cleaner is great, spray it on, have a beer, wash it off. Bikes clean and it leaves a coating on un protected metal that inhibits corrosion

Darkaeon,
I purchased a new Nighster in July of 09. It has never been ridden in the rain and always garaged. About nine months into it I noticed some serious rust around the bolt that holds the rear fender on. At a closer inspection there was also rust on the front fender around the bolt and around the lip of both fenders. The paint was coming off in chunks like it was never sealed to the metal. I have been fighting with the dealer for over 9 months now. They replaced the fenders but will not do anything else to bring the bike to where it should be. I really don't want this piece of crap anymore. It is not going to end well. I know of another guy with the same problem who is seeking to do a class action law suit. I am trying to get a hold of him. Good Luck.

It's an 09' so, its a year old. It's going to happen. Just stay on top of it and you should be able to keep it under control. Do your self a favor though and paint the exhuast bolts on the heat sheilds. They will rust, so paint em' before they look bad.
