it cranks but wont start????

i dont know that much about sportsters yet but have you tested for voltage at the coils with the ignition in the run position after this happens?
with no spark to both front or rear cylinder it would think ignition problem

I own and ride a 1999 XL883. I would check the cable connections where they attach to the battery to make sure that they are tight. Vibration WILL make them loosen up. I would also check where the ground wire is attached to make sure that the connection is clean and firmly secured. I had a problem with the automatic gas shutoff valve. The motor quit running even though I had a full tank of gas. It turned out to be the vacuum assisted gas shutoff valve. I just removed the part that blocked the gas flow and it fixed the problem and it only took a few minutes and it didn't cost anything but my time. Good luck with your problem and ride safe out there!

It could be a number of problems. It could be as simple as the 90* connector at the coil has loosened up over the years, and just needs removed/given a good squeeze to tighten it back up to make a good connection again. It could be the negative battery cable is broken at the connector solder joint where it is bolted to the engine, as I believe that was an issue with the '99 and even happened to my '00. Start checking all your electrical connections first. With my battery cable, the bolts were tight, but when I jiggled the negative wire while still bolted in, it just slide out of the connector.
