Default 1200 custom, how many miles is tolerable?

Hey guys, my names Matt im 20 years old and have saved up a reasonable amount of money to purchase my first bike. I am serioulsly considering the 2006 1200 custom. My question is, my mom lives around 900 miles away and i want to be able to make a few runs out to see her each year, I know the sportster is the smaller of the h-ds, but im young my backs in good shape is this run pratical on the 1200, whats about the farthest you can go on one of these without punishing your body. Thanks Matt

Welcome to HDF. I think you'll see that with the right seat, you'll be able to do that trip no problem. That and make sure that your reach to the handlebars is good and comfortable.

Matt, I bought my 05 1200 C on eBay and flew out to get the bike in Tennessee. The trip back to Tucson was 1700 miles. Of the several days it took to get back, two of them were 10 hour days. I'm 72 years old. I hope this helps you out!!!!

When I was your age or close to it. I spent 18 mos touring east to west coast and upper canada to ecuador with the weather. I would vary my speed so you don't keep it up around the 4000 rpm range all day long. you should be able to make the run in 2 to 2 1/2 days.

those guys are crazy

I only like to sped about 45 minutes to an hour in the stock seat... hop off for a leak, food, gas, a drink, smoke, something....

then hop back on for another shot hopefully less than an hour.

Boy, the responses sure are encouraging! I leave for a 700 mile run to Somerset, PA today. Then, I have the 9/11 Memorial Ride that starts on Friday from Somerset. And THEN I have the 1000 mile ride back home from New York City.

I have the stock seat, for now. I'll let you know how it goes.

don't get me wrong.... I typically ride all day on most weekends... but during those all-day rides... I like to stop every 45 minutes or so

we usually stop every 100 or so miles. but only for enough time to fill up and stand up. I have an 04 883 sporty but i put the big pillow seat on it. my fiance and i have rode for 5+hours on it. my advice go with bigggest possible seat and at very least highway pegs. also make sure your bars are in a comfy spot.
