how comfortable are apes or mini apes i like to take pretty long trips. and at the moment i have drag pipes and my back is killing me. thanks. what size would be good the riser that is on the bike comes rite at the top of tank so i dont think that it will need a riser.
100x more comfortable for distance riding. 14" Burly Narrow apes on nightster risers and top clamp. I am 5' 9" and the bars are about 2" lower than my shoulders.
I'm happy with narrow 12" apes on my custom risers. The straight custom riser isn't bad looking, but I am switching that out for a set of 3" risers. I'm about 6' and with the custom riser the grips are maybe 2" higher than my shoulders; the new risers should get them about where I want 'em. Comfort is great. I had the XLC drag bar on it and the same problem; after 1/2 or and hour of riding my back would be hurting from hunching over. Not a problem anymore.
Love em! I switched to 16" on a 1 1/2" riser. Looks Bad *** and is Waayy more comfortable. I used to get the burning between the shoulder blades....not anymore!

I'm 5'7" tall and put 16" burley narrow glides on 1" risers on my 1200. Way more comfortable on long trips. I rode 9 1/2 hours with only gas stops to thunder beach and it was no problem. With the stock bars I would get a cramp in my neck and shoulders. The only complaint I have is my right thumb goes numb about the time to stop for gas. I use it as my gas gauge.
Apes are the best for long distance in my opinion! I have had both drag bars on the stock risers and now 14" Burly Narrow Glide apes. With a comfy seat and these bars I can ride all day long on my Nightster! Its awesome because knowing that I am comfortable on my bike makes me want to ride 100x more than before! I used to think twice about long trips with the drag bars, but not anymore. I installed them over the winter, and I have put almost 2000 miles with the apes on my bike since the riding season started here in Indiana.
That being said you aren't limited to apes. They are just 1 of many tall bar options that will make for comfort on the long haul. You could also try going with a taller riser, maybe around 6" with the same drag bars you have now.
I have a 2007 1200L, with stock bars and risers (I think 1.5"). I'm also looking at the 12" mini-apes. I'm 5'10. I have 2 questions. Would i need to buy risers, and what length of cables do I need to purchase from the stock ones?
