I admit I'm confused SE airceaner and K&N elements
Ok, I bought a S.E. aircleaner kit for my 2000 883 from my dealer a couple years back and installed with no problem. the element says "dry type do not oil" but it is a cloth element like the K&N. Today I went to the dealer to get a new element because after 2 cleanings I didn't like the looks of the element. The parts guy brings me a box that says "oval high flow element, part of S.E. Aircleaner kit" It's the element without the metal hub that the mounting screws go thru to bolt it to the intake. I thought maybe the old element slipped of the metal hub and the new one would slip on but no, it appears to be hot glued in place.
Ok, I'll admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm a little confused here. Am I supposed to cut the old element off the hub?
Why is this element different than the one I bought with the kit?

Are you sure it hasn't just kind of melted on there? I can't imagine hot gluing an air filter to the backing plate.
Was it attached to the plate when it was new? if so maybe the replacement one you bought was the wrong part.
It sounds like you got the wrong filter. If I'm reading it right then you are talking about the front piece that sits in front of the filter that you run the bolts through. If that's the case then the filter "hub" is not meant to be taken off. It is part of the filter assembly. If I were you I would take the old and new filter back to the dealer and try to get the correct one

Yep, that's kinda what i figured too. It's just weird that there would be 2 different inserts for a S.E. aircleaner for the same year bike. Off to Dayton OH today for a job so Monday I'll drop by the dealer and get it straightened out...
You have a late SE air cleaner on your bike which where just a ghost of what the originals where and the dealer sold you a filter for an old SE air cleaner. Those new ones are poor quality I've seen some develop holes in them in less than a 1000 miles, it's basically a glorified paper filter.
I'd watch EBAY you see a used original SE set up quite often and they are reasonably priced because they fit an old bike and most people don't know what they are.
I'll see what I find out at the dealer. I got that replacement insert for $39 which is a great price for a K&N insert. Your saying the loder style inserts will fit on my newer style backplate?
Ok, I got bored tonight and it's supposed to rain tomorrow so I tore my old aircleaner off the mounting plate and sized up the new aircleaner on the plate. There was no notch on the element to go around the metal edge but there was a rubber shoulder so I put some RTV all around both sides of the shoulder and dropped the plate onto the insert. I placed a can of paint on it to keep positive pressure overnight. Tomorow I'll inspect and hopefully install it.
If this works I'll have a #39 K&N insert which is a pretty good deal.

Damn......that looks like a lot of freakin trouble to put a filter on...looks to me like the wrong part but if it seals and sticks on there permenantely you will be ok because the K&N filter is really good...Clean and oil...Just tell the next guy who buys the bike.
