Default Speed Sensor

Hey all,

My 2006 sportster's speed sensor stops working every time I wash the bike (has happened like 4 times now) until it dries out after a few days, and so I want to seal it up so its actually watertight instead of taking it back to the dealer. But, the HD manual only shows a close-up of the sensor, so I can't figure out where on the bike it actually is, I'm guessing its under the left side cover, but figured I'd ask before rooting around too much.

Anyone else have this problem? I don't even spray the bike off, just buckets of water, so its not like I'm using high pressure or anything, so hopefully its just a loose boot or whatever's supposed to keep water out.

The VSS is located on top of the crankcase, right behind the starter.

It has a teflon coated O-Ring, and is held in place with a retaining screw. The retaining screw is suppose to be torqued down to 80 - 100 in-lb, but I seldom use a torque wrench on stuff like this and normally just 'snug it down'.

Here is a picture I found (which you might already have).

Pouring outside right now (first rain we've had in a long time), but if you have trouble locating the exact location of the VSS I'll try and get a detail picture of it's location on my bike later on.

I have the same problem. I have to blow my out with air after a washing. I think I need a new teflon seal. I will get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. All you have to do is take the sensor off by using a scew driver to pry the clip off the mount that is on the bike. You do not have to take off the whole sensor body off. Just unplug the sensor.

This is the first I've heard of Sportys having this problem. Glad I don't have it, but hope you get it worked out.
