Default Allen Wrenches?

Does everyone just use the standard allen wrenches on their bikes or do they use other hex related tools?
Reason I ask is because some of the big bolts (like the rear shock bolt) is a huge hex bolt that is pretty difficult to loosen with stripping the nut. (Yes, I am using the right size if that is what you may be wondering).

Grasshopper....

Dem bolts holding your shocks are referred to as TORX.......

So yes, you might want to invest is some more hand tools..... For those particular ones, it would be adviseable to get a long handled 3/8 drive ratchet to motivate it out with the correct TORX bit ..... get the T-25, 27, 40, 45, and 50....

Those should get you through the basic stuff....

So NO, you aren't using the RIGHT size.....

Whoa, keep the allen wrenches away from the shocks! Torx is right.

Star = torx,

Six sided box = allen wrench

Use the biggest size that fits, not just one that grabs or you could be in for problems.

Take it easy and take your time, and drink beer while listening to Jimmy Buffett. Proven strategy for successful bike projects.

If you want to work on your scoot yourself, you MUST invest in a complete set of hex head (allen) sockets and the regular wrenches AND and full set of torx sockets. Be aware that anything (accessories) you add to your bike that is not HD might be metric...then you'll need metric wrenches, sockets, allens etc. Just bought a "laydown license plate bracket" from my HD dealer...it was metric (made in Taiwan). He didn't even carry the HD part. Go figure.

I just had to do a late night trip to Walmart for a set of allen wrenches since my fold out set didn't have anything bigger than 1/4". They had a decent set for $12 with both metric and US in it. The dumb part is that I needed the wrench to remove the belt cover after dropping a nut in there while working on changing my exhaust. Helpful piece of advice, be REALLY careful about removing nuts off the exhast on the rear head of the engine. That is one nasty place to lose hardware.
