You would probably be better off just using the extended length 63813-90T filter on your Sportster.

Most guys I know run these (especially during the hot summer months) as they provide an additional surface area for cooling, and they also allow you to run slightly more oil in the system.

Default Why?

A couple of thoughts on this matter. I was gonna do the same thing, got an oil temp guage to see of a cooler was necessary
(get the H-D guage, the Drag Specialtis model sucks hard). Now this isn't a stock Sporty, but not radicle either. Thunder Max w Autotune, N3 Andrews, S&S and American custom , all there to help the Sporty run like the factory would build it with out our fav Uncle's help.

Anyway, temp around town is about 180 - 190 this summer in Texas ( I don't do a lot of lights if I can help it). On the road, yeh I trip a lot, it usually runs about 190 - 210. On long up hill grades in thin air like in Nevada the hottest I've gotten the oil is 240 deg. running 70 uphill at 8000-10000ft

I use Amsoil 20W50 which also helps (good for about 20deg cooler). Most oil, even Dino automotive oil is designed to run in the 180 - 210 area, and most will not break down until over 300 deg - by then you will have other probs. Amsoil is thermally stable into the 400's.

SO, why spend the bucks unless it looks good to you or you have some other esoteric reason. Go to Harber Freight and get a laser thermal detector - $29.95. Check you head temp, your freezer, outside temp, your GF internal temp - all kinds of interesting uses, even your oil temp, fin temp in various places on the jug (the bikes, not your GF), but an 883 running a decent AFR dosen't need an oil cooler unless youjust want one. Those big aluminum fins really work well for that engine.

Sounds like your local markup is pretty high - we only pay about double the stateside price for parts here. You might be better off ordering online and pay a bit for the shipping. That's how I get my parts and can usually find a sale/discount somewhere so it even offsets the shipping charge.

Check this one out I just found on Ebay...

Reusable - FLO Reusable Stainless Steel Oil Filter by PC Racing #PCS4C

The outer housing is polished billet aluminum

Fits most Harley Davidson motorcycles.

I challenge you to find a better oil filter than this beauty. This reusable oil filter is made from laser cut, medical grade, 304 stainless steel micronic filter cloth. In addition to filtering down to 35 microns, this high tech filter technology maintains consistent flow under all conditions including extreme heat (up to 600 degrees), the presence of water, and cold start-ups. This filter has magnetic pre-filtering, a progressive rate bypass valve, a drilled wrench nut for easy removal and for safety wiring required at most race tracks. All this encased in a beautiful polished billet alluminum housing that doubles as an oil cooler. FLO Oil Filters will save the average user hundreds of dollars and valuable time, by simply using this one filter for the life of your motorcycle or ATV. The "turn lock" design allows for easy disassembly for cleaning of the filter element. This also allows for easy inspection of the trapped particles, so you know what is going on in your engine. The filter element can be cleaned with solvent, contact/brake cleaner, kerosene, or any other degreasing agent; even common dish soap.

This high tech filter technology is widely used in all types of auto racing including NASCAR, Indy type cars, Formula 1 and in the Aerospace industry where filtration is of the utmost importance. Now you can have this technology in your motorcycle, ATV, or UTV. I have a complete line of FLO stainless steel oil filters by PC Racing including "drop in" filters so send me an email if you can't find one for you, as I likely have it.

Applications: Part #PCS4C

Default Filters

A tad off topic here BUT I gotta jump in... 35 micron is OK but not REAL good oil filtration. Stock HD is 30 micron - better but still not excellent, and AMSOIL EaOM135 Motorcycle Oil Filters for your sporty provides full flow filtering efficiency of 98.7 percent at 15 microns, It's the dirt which wears your motor and this puppy filters 2X smaller junk than HD. Don't fret the cooler issue (note my reply below) consider your engines oil quality. Think about it... Snarv

The current 'stock' recommended HD filter for the TC engines is the 5-micron SuperPremium5 Oil Filter. You can also get HD filters with a 10-micron rating.

Since the HD 5-micron filter was introduced many dealerships even recommend it for the Sportster EVO based bikes (for some unknown reason).

The HD 30-micron filters have been recommended for the EVO and EVO based Harley engines for years and years, and continue to be the filters of choice even though smaller micron filters are available.

Most guys I know (including Harley dealership mechanics) won't use anything but the 30-micron filters on their bikes, including those with TC engines, as cutting open used 5-micron filters has shown less than positive results of oil actually being filtered through the packing material.

Someone had mentioned the 21-micron filters made by WIX. I probably wouldn't have a problem using a 21-micron filter, especially on a EVO based engine, but there is no way I would want to go with a micron rating lower than that of the WIX.
