I use one very similar to that. Works fine. It wont get the bike far enough off the ground to have both wheels up but it will get it straight up and down and take some pressure off the shocks/springs. I've replaced both using this type of stand no problems.

does the backend come up high enough to get the rear wheels off and is it good for changing the oil?
im thinking its similar to a night/centerstand if so it will be perfect for what i need it for.

It works great for oil changes.
If you set the bar back enough on the frame it should get it up enough to get ther rear wheel off. I've got longer shocks on my bike so it doesnt get as much clearance but gets the job done. Hope this helps.

I'm not saying that will or won't work. But since you obviously like to have good equipment, as seen by your post, why would you want a second rate motorcycle stand?? When it comes to quality versus space....well, I always find the room for good stuff. And I'm sure that if you tried hard enough, you'd find space for a better jack, one that will be more useful and versatile in the long run.
I`d agree with kahaone - here you can buy a real bike stand on special for $89.99 twice a year - regular $149.99 - I`d make the space in the garage for a real one.
Sportster.org had the plans to make this out of wood for less than $20. The only difference was they had plans to make a notch for the Sportster exhaust which unlike a big twin goes lower than the frame. If you bought this you may have to make some provision for that or remove the exhaust prior to lifting.
