CAUTION - when changing your headlight bulb !!!

My buddy with a Dyna decided to upgrade the bulb to a PIAA. After a 2hr. ride we stopped for lunch and I noticed his lens was shattered - not broken but full of cracks like a spider web. We took secondary roads and we were never behind a car or truck so no chance of a rock - plus it was`nt actually broken in pieces - just cracked all over but in tact.

Turns out he overtightened the chrome ring - not allowing for heat expansion.

Let this be your $100.00 lesson - tighten but not too much.

I wonder if that's what made mine crack on my 2001 softail last time i replaced the bulb? I thought it was a rock cause we get lots of those from the gravel trucks running up & down the highway

Leaving aside the fact that PIAA is a pretty crap brand of bulb, was the new bulb higher wattage? That can play a large role too. Higher wattage bulbs put out a lot more heat and you can end up melting the plug or even the wiring.
