Hi there, I just took my 72 ironhead out for a spin yesterday with my old man and when I hit my rear bread (drum break) sometimes it grinds like when your bike doesnt want to go into gear
also when I shut my ignition off the bike continues to run.
I would suggest that you ask these questions in the IRONHEAD section as there are some very COOL and knowledgeable members on there that may be able to help you out and answer your questions. Good luck with your issues and ride safe out there!
No. A Sportster is a Sportster but the Ironhead Sportster engines are no longer being made by Harley since the introduction of the EVO Sportster engine and there are many Sportster owner and riders who are members on the HDForums that would like to help answer your questions but may not be too familiar with the Ironhead engine and its idiosyncrasies as much as members who are current Ironhead owners and rides would, so I wanted to direct you to the Ironhead section so that you might get a better response to the issues that you posted about. Late 1970 Sportsters when to rear disk brakes and so more experienced Sportster owners and riders and Ironhead owners and riders would generally have more direct knowledge about rear drum brakes on a Ironhead Sportster than many of the more current model Sportster owners and riders would have. A grinding sound from the rear drum brake might well be a sign that it is time to replace your rear brake shoes but you should inspect them first before you go out and buy new brake shoes. The Dieseling of the engine after you turn off the key is another issue that needs to be addressed, but I have not had that ever happen to me so I will defer to other members that might have some insight into that particular problem. I am glad that you are trying to keep that old Ironhead running and on the road. Good luck with your issues and ride safe out there!
1) Yep, check brake shoes. Remove wheel and look. Also check the pedal, linkage and rear wheel alignment.
2) Engine. Might be run on (detonation)...timing. Review your manual and giver 'er a tune up. Else, yes igintion switch possible.
