Stealer quoted me $340.00 for 10,000 mile service. They also said it will be more like $440 to $450 out the door with tax gaskets and oil. They also said it's like 5 hours of work and it's best if I just droped the bike off, no problem there for me. What the HELL do they do to it to make it that much, thats like 2 months payments for me.
I can't remember the whole 10K or 20K service plan, but I think the only special thing that's added on is the clutch adjustment & checking the neck bearing/fall away. Other than that, it should be just as any other service-Fluid change, check fastners, etc. I think I spent $50 or so at most when I did my last service on my own.
the owners manual also explains the basic services i.e. oil changes, belt adjustment. I believe if the bike is running fine why would I pay the dealer 350 bone (in Washington) to do whatever it is they do.
I forgot, they also said that they take the front and back wheels off to check bearings. I also ask why should I even bother since the bike is out of warn. He came back with it's your life you're taking in your hands. Anyways i'm gonna check around, I don't have the tools to do all the chit they said that they do to it.

Manual $60.00
Jack $60.00
Tools $350.00 - 1ncludes 2 Craftsman - $80.00 torque wrenches
---------------
Total $470.00 - Not much different than their "Out the Door" price for ONE service.

The independent shop I go to charged me $92.00 and watched him do it all. I have the service manual so I knew what was supposed to be done. For $42 dollars more it wasn't worth my time.
Well, that is an effective money making ploy.
They once quoted my wife $650.00 for back brakes on a car she had in getting tires, said the back brakes were shot (at 50,000 miles) which was true, but they wanted to replace calipers and disks, and pads.
I asked why calipers, they last a long time and can be rebuilt, and they replied 'you don't want to take chances with your safety'.
Follow that logic and you need a new car every year as the old one must be unsafe.
It cost me $40.00 for new pads....
How many people fall for such crap I don't know, but suspect its quite a few...
As far as the Harley goes, the big items are fluid changes, primary/clutch checks and drive belt checks, and to make sure nothing got loose.
At 4000 miles, I adjusted the primary chain and changed the fluids twice, went over the nuts and bolts, had a loose one on the front upper motor stabilizer mount and one loose exhaust to head nut.
Just got my 10,000 mile servie.
$160 out the door.
$192 is the set price but the tech only charged me $160 since my bike didn' need too much work and didn't take the scheduled time.
And I got to watch the entire time.
