Default Warm up problem

So I just bought my first Harley last week, 2005 XL883 with under 4,000 miles. I was told at the dealership that it hadn't been rode a lot, so I'm wondering if that's the answer to the issue I'm having. I've been pulling the choke out when starting it up (cold engine) and it usually starts right up the first click of the start switch, but not always. After letting the bike warm up for the 30 seconds recommended by Harley, I try to give it some gas and the bike tries to cut off like it's choking. So I don't know if it's getting too much fuel or not enough. Any help would be appreciated, I'm trying to learn about these carbureted motors.

Push the choke back in at least halfway after a lil warm up and then try and give it gas. Ride around for a few minutes with the choke halfway or slightly out until completly warmed up if need be.

Alright, I'll try that. But I know from before, it would just sputter and die when giving it throttle. I then let off the throttle and it goes back to idling.

Could have a air leak around the intake gaskets. You might could run some Sea Foam threw it to clean out the fuel system.

There is nothing wrong with the bike. Carbed Sportys are just slow to warm up. When first started it will spit and hack at you for ~ 4-5 minutes and then she will smooth out. Try not to use the choke after the start but control the engine with the throttle.

My carbed Sporty never spits and/or hacks after a 30 second warm up.

Had a 05 and would crank like yours...push in a bit when ready to go after a minute or so and feel the throttle how it reacted....usually rode aboutr a mile with the choke and then while riding i would push it in all the way.....
Hell of a win in G-Vegas this past weekend hey...That was freaking AWESOME>>>> go Pirates...

That is a carbed sporty for ya. My Stepdad has a 2002 883 and it runs good, but you have to let it warm up if is sits over night or for a long time. 30 seconds is a joke, his bike needs like 2 mins with the choke out at first and then about half way in then it will rev up and run fine after a few mins. Man one more reason I love my FI bikes so much.

Here's the trick the dealer showed me: Start the bike with the enrichener all the way out, let it idle for 30 seconds full out. Push it in halfway, and let it run until the rear rocker cover is warm. Take the back of your hand, and place it on the cover with the engine running. You don't want it cold, you don't want it burning hot, just nice and warm. Then you should be able to put the enrichener in all the way. If you decide to ride the bike in the "halfway" setting, ride for a few minutes and push it all the way in. You should be all set to go then.
