I've got the HD manual for my bike and it's good but I have dropped hints that the "Fix my hog" DVD would be nice. My birthday is the 27th so I'm hopin for that DVD so I can do lot's of wrenchin during the Winter time. My daughter will most likely be all over it.
My '98 is my first Harley and I'm learning everything I can about it. My local Indie is also very supportive and knowledgeable. Can't say the same for the local Harley stealer.............New front brakes goin on this weekend...
The genuine HD manual is extremely helpful, newbie or old hand.
The after market manuals give me a good laugh a lot of the time.
Not quite as good as a typical fix-it video.
BUY ALL 3 !!!!! The HARLEY manual and parts manual and check them out, then buy the video to see how they do it. For me the video is good to re-force what I read about... I am not a 100% fan of just watching the video and running out to the bike, one of the videos I watched even said to buy a HARLEY manuals. The service manual takes you thru the task, the parts manual gives you an "exploded" view of the parts you are working on, plus if you need to buy a new part, you can go to the dealership with the number in hand. Forget the after market manual, You get what you pay for !!!
I got both and would recommend the video also....It's nice to see someone "doing" the work and then you can follow along. Sometimes I just need to see it in action as I don't always get something from just reading it.
Thanks guys looks like I will try to pick both up.My dealer does good work on what they WANT to fix not what you ask them to.Just yesterday I had a gasket replaced on my shifter and asked them to replace a vent tube that they have replaced once before but this time I was told that it was normal for the vent tubes to split.Yea right the last one split within 10 miles of leaving the dealer.
I am sure you have thought of this but also look on the internet for videos....there are a ton of them out there....bookmark them or even download if you know how....also check the ratings of the DVD to see what others say about it....best of luck!!
The Fix My Hog DVD is excellent for walking you through all of the routine 5K mile interval service procedures. But, it should be used as an adjunct to the detailed HD Service Manual.
I recommend both if you're new to working on Harleys.
