I have a vivid black '09 xl883c. I'm thinking of having the tank painted metal flake black or gold, like the 48 colors. I haven't seen a custom bike with a metal flake tank. it's the big 4.5 tank. I'm going to leave everything else black.
I've also thought of just swapping the tank out for a peanut tank painted metal flake. what do you think?
Getting your tank painted will be cheaper than buying a new H-D tank already painted. The other option is to buy a used tank off Craig's list or eBay and have it painted.
I had that big tank on my 06 you see pictured. Swap for the peanut. My opinion - can't stand those tanks. They are too big and the sportster is a skinny bike. I bought a 3.3 cause those 4.5's just don't jive with the rest of the symmetry.
P.S. Watch and make sure your stock speedo clears the top of the tank.
yeah. i was wondering about that. if i swapped out the tank for a peanut are my stock bars and speedo gonna clear it. has anyone done it and does it work without any mods? i kinda like the stock bars, riser and speedo combo on the bike.
get some apes, should clear no problem. But but i would go to a local or non-local custom motorcycle shop and have them get some tanks they have in-shop and have them mock up some fitments, thats the true way to know if your going to clear with that 4.5 G tank. Plus if they have one, you can see how its going to look before you spend money on one. Go with a peanut and have it painted, i was thinking about the sedona orange with metal flake.
thought about apes, but after reading what a pain and expensive it is to do a custom, i've almost decided against it. i haven't seen any pictures of apes with the stock riser which leads me to believe it looks like crap or somebody would be doing it and showing it off.
Yeah, don't do apes with your pullback risers. It DOES look like crap. The 3.3 gal will NOT fit with your speedo. The 48 MIGHT cause it's tiny, compared to the 3.3
Do apes if you plan on buying regular XL risers and mounts, which is about $50.
