Default 09 XR 1200 Yay or Nay?

Hi All,
Im looking for some feed back on the XR 1200 specifically 2009, or any year for that matter. My son is looking for his first HD, and kind of has his mind made up on the XR. Does anyone have good or bad experiences with one? Are they holding up for the short time theyve been out? I see they have a lot of trick stuff like real Brembos, inverted forks, oil cooler. Thanks for any and all responses.

The XR's have proven a very reliable bike. Motor has some nice upgrades such as oil cooled heads, 10 to 1 compression, lighter flywheel and 50mm downdraft intake. Blast to ride and very stable.

For all things XR might I suggest: http://www.xr1200ownersgroup.com/site/forum.php . Lots of great information there.

The Newer X model has a major suspension upgrade that would cost an 09
owner about $1500 plus labor,,
He Is gonna want that,,
If you buy the 09 factor that in,,

If he is a Crotch rocket rider,,Gixer's n such I hope he understands
that This bike Is still almost 600 Lbs and Is not gonna compete with the latest
and greatest Metric Rockets.
It's a hot 1200 engine with 883 gearing I think,,
For a Sportster It should be real fast and handle like a dream,,,

I'm real happy with my '09. Perfect ergonomics, good lean angle, good low-end response. Great everyday bike, working-class Harley.

+1 Wrenchmonkey. I also have an 09 and am happy enough with it as is. Still don't have a lot of miles on it, but it's the best Sportster I ever owned, certainly the best stock sporty...more power and better handling, but certainly no sportbike. It took the place of a 620 Monster in the stable. More torque, more weight, and far cooler looking.
I'll put the effort into the 2006 XL883R I just bought. I have a basket case 2000 Buell X1 which will be donating a load of parts for the project. Cams, heads, cylinders, etc. Maybe the forks and wheels, too. Who knows? Work in progress.

Thanks for the feedback. The kid is set on the XR, Im a bagger person myself but from the feedback and what Ive been reading sounds like a solid bike. Do the 09's and 10's come stock with 98 hp or is that just the 2011 X model? Thanks again for the info. The kids going to off his KTM 250sx for his down, Im glad hes taking an interest in acquiring it the right way, maybe he will appreciate it more, owning something nice.

All versions of the XR have 90hp at the flywheel.....bikes are showing 80-85hp at the rear wheel stock. The only difference between the '09-'10 models and the '11 X is the '11's have the fully adjustable forks and rear shocks ($1500 accessory in the catalog) and the floating front rotors. Well, and the colors, of course.

I enjoyed my Iron but eventually wanted something more "sporty" yet refused to swing a leg over a true sport bike, something the XR was not made to compete with. I find it funny how many folks try to compare the two. It is what it is....a fun, stable street (not sport) bike to enjoy what is known as motorcycling and does not pretend to be otherwise.

That's why every car made is not blue.....not everyone likes a blue car
