I went to 16" apes with 1" risers on my 05 1200C. They are awesome for long trips. My hands are just above shoulder height, and all the pain in my upper back and neck is gone when riding 3-400 mile days. After you try them, nothing else feels right.

I have 10''-12'' apes now. I moved them forward a little and feels soo much better.

I agree with deepsea. Im putting on 16'' this weekend hopefully.

I love the feel of apes.

You got an awesome looking bike. I have the 1200C model with 16" apes. I have a 22" sissy bar like yours on now. I like the look of the smaller tank you have and was thinking about changing it along with a spring solo seat. What kind of range do you have with the little 48 tank? Most of the guys I ride with have road kings and ultras. Not sure if they want to stop for gas that often.

Holding your arms above your shoulders is quite painful after awhile. I used to work on fighter/bomber aircraft and after having my hands above my shoulders for extended periods of time it was very uncomfortable. Apes do look cool but i cant see how people like them after all they aren't very functional be it ergo or control wise. Bike looks cool regardless.

you might try a set of the old buckhorns. they put your arms at about mid-chest with your wrists at a comfortable angle.
as for the older 2.2 gal tank-we rode sportsters for years that way. after 90-100 miles it was time to get off for the 1.8 gallon fillup, have a cigarette and a beer.

I agree, I prefer wide, flat and just below my shoulders.
