It's not like HD to make a product that you would need to take the wheel off or unbolt the shocks and jack the bike to take on and off.
Yes, you'd think that - but unfortunately that's exactly how an HD Detachable Sideplate kit is mounted (P/N 53544-04) - with the bolt heads on the inside of the wheel well - otherwise you'd have those big ugly bolt heads staring out at you from the bike when the backrest is removed. I found this out the hard way when I ended up paying the dealer to drop my rear wheel (around $ 170..00 to be exact).

When I decided I didn't like the look of saddlebags, I removed them and very carefully hacksawed off the bolts from the detachable kit I had ordered - rather than pay to have the rear dropped again..

It's poor design for sure and Harley should know better..I guess they assume you will have the dealer install them [:'(]

Using the standard mounts that come with products like the rigid bags you could probably thread the head inside the bags - however, you may have a little of the excess bolt protruding inside the bag instead of under the wheel well.

Of course the best solution would be a different bolt configuration packaged with Harley saddlebag accessories.

Well, yes I guess I could cut the bolts -- but then I could never use the saddlebags again. I would like to keep the parts in tact. The bolt went in -- so there has to be a way to get it out -- I just can't see a way to do it without removing the shocks.
Why couldn't you use the saddlebags again?

I stuck my hand up a bunch of hardbag-packin' Harleys today, and each one was different! Some were bolted like yours, others had a nut inside the fender. Hmmmmm.

You could have a machine shop make a long stud, threaded on both ends so you could run it in from the outside, then use a nylock nut or two jam nuts inside the fender. NOTE: Don't use stainless bolts and nuts together as they tend to gall, unless you use an anti-sieze compound. Just a thought.

To install mine I had to use a scissors jack to raise the bike and remove the top shock bolts (T-50 Torx) and let the wheel drop. When the bolts are out, lower the jack and the shocks will return to their original position...rebolt.

Is it easy to get the bike back into position to put the shock back on ? A spring compressor isn't needed?

No compression tool needed, use the jack and it will all line back up pretty easy.

Did you try deflating the tire to get the bolts off? Then you could just have to reinflate to put them back on. Still a pain but a possibility.

That's a really good idea -- thanks.

The rear tire should drop enough to remove the bolt just by using a scissor jack.

Somehow, during the last 1 1/2 years, I'm pretty sure he has figured it out. [:-]
