Lol.
Sounds like a term coined from jealous, broke-*** ppl that spent their time drinking & hanging out instead of busting their asses in college (or several colleges) so they can have a CAREER that nets them the income to buy whatever the hell they want regardless if they have the time to use it every day.
But I could be wrong! Lol.
I don't think it's about the money. I believe it's about people who buy a Harley- Davidson because it's a status symbol to them. At the same time they buy full leather gear along with hundreds of stickers and patches and then act like they are true riders. Personally, I do not care one way or another because it has no effect on my life. I am just offering a possible explanation. I ride because I love it. I ride a Harley- Davidson because I love it. I recognize that a Harley- Davidson is exactly what it is supposed to be, and that's my idea of what a motorcycle is.

Reason: addition
No one buys one, without changing something about them.
Don't have to be a flat out rebuilt customization, to "personalize" your bike.
That's how it is with 90% of all bikes, not just Harleys. Heck the sportbike guys have been building some radical customs. And there are very few of them that haven't had aftermarket stuff added.
Couple of examples:
But you didn't say anything about "personalization", you said you didn't see any creativity, big difference. The Goldwing guys have been "personalizing" their bikes for a long time.

most Harley guys are posers. Half of them can't even change there own spark plugs. They are worst then Mustang and Vet owners.
But we do know people who can and are glad to pay and possibly learn how to also. Then while talking to them they learn what it is we know how to do. After that conversation they hire us to remodel thier kitchen which gives us more money to spend on more stuff we don't know how to install. then we go back to them for that job and they give us the name of thier friend who needs our services, and so on and so on. So I say bring on the posers we make America great.

Just love guys who can't let a chance to slam another person go by. And use bad grammar doing it.
By your name I take it you love Pontiacs, must be hatin' life right now. It's too bad the last decent performing Pontiac wasn't even a Pontiac, or American. Can you say...Holden?
Besides, what's a "poser"? By the hard core MC definition, anyone who doesn't run in a major "outlaw" MC is a poser. That would make most of us on this forum posers. Hmmmm.

*Hello (stands up) my names ironhide_uk and I'm a poser! I've been riding for about 10 ish years and I have never changed a spark plug.
I take it to a garage, pay a man, who does the work for me!
I don't care how it rides (soft shocks, 0-60, brake horse power etc)as long as it starts, gets me from A to B, engines ok and looks good!
Thanks for listening (sits back down)
