Default Iron 883 good deal or not?

Hi Guys.

New to the forum, and new to bikes. I am looking to buy my first bike.

Looking at Iron 883's. I love the blacked out look.

My local dealer has a 2011 Iron 883 in Black Denim that they will let go out the door for $8276.00 w/ TTL.
another local dealer has the same bike for $8375.00 OTD w/ TTL.

I found a left over new 2009 at another out of state dealer for $6700.00 OTD w/o TTL. Add about $700 for TTL, plus the expense of getting the bike home....and its silver, which I am not as fond of as the black.
So not that great of a deal when you consider all the additional expenses I'd incur to get up and going.

Any insight you guys can offer is much appreciated.

I say forget about the 2009 and get the 2011 for $8276.00 OTD. The 2009 is now 2 years old and IMO they are still asking too much OTD, plus it's not the color you want anyways.

883 is a decent bike, but doesn't have the good heads and cam that the 1200 does.

Default Your paying list

List on the bike is right at $8000. You likely could do a little better but not much. However the Sportster market is glutted with used bikes at this time and it is a buyers market for those that are willing to do their homework. Look at the bike you want, the 883 iron ...for less money than the NEW Iron you can get a very low mileage Nightster. Same bike looks wise but it is a 1200.....a lot more bike for less money. Do not know what used Irons go for but you should save a lot if you find a nice used one. At any rate do not get in a rush, educate yourself on the choices and use your money to get the BEST bike for YOU. There are deals to be had with just a bit of looking. Good luck, enjoy the search and do not get in a hurry.

And the 09s have the "hole in the fender" ECM location. Stick to the 10 and up if you plan on any of the spring seat mods later down the road. The price on the 09 isn't that bad considering it's basically the same bike less the ECM/harness reconfig if it's brand new. They may negotiate more on it to get rid of it. The new 883s have the same W cams the 1200s do, and 883 heads work great for an 883.

Personally I would save the money and get the 09, as long as it is new from the dealer it would still have it's two year warranty. UNLESS you are set on getting a solo spring seat, the 09s have a larger ECU than the 2011s and it is under the seat and spring seats don't fit.

But you might also look for used 09 or 10,, I just go my 09 883L a couple months ago,, had less then 700 miles on it and the warranty is good until Sept 2011. Paid $5000 plus TTL. That allowed me to have $1000 for changing it around to the way I like.. Put on a Mustang solo seat with back rest, forward controls, solo luggage rack, mini windscreen, and Progressive shocks.

The price on the 09 Iron aint a lot cheaper by the time you add TTL and the expense of delivery, so buying new seems to make sense IMO, and you have already made your mind up on the Colour....My motto in life is 'Im here for a good time, not a long time' , so armed with that thought in your mind Buy new,Buy Black and enjoy.....
