Default Removing Head Gasket

I pulled my heads and pryed off the gasket. There is a silver finish left on the head. Do I need to get that off before installing with new head gasket?

yes, use a straight razor blade and scrape it off. Be careful not to gouge the the top of the cylinder or the bottom of the head and make sure nothing gets down into the cylinder.

het a die grinder or a dremel too and gently, I mean gently, sand off the remainer and then use a cleaning solvent or gasket prep to clean and prep the area

I would NOT use this method! Although it could work, there is too much chance of fuggin something up. Not to mention you can't control the debris you make. It's not that hard to clean off. You could use the scotchbrite, simple green and warm water method if the jug was off of the bike, but not when it is on the bike. again, too much chance of getting some scotchbrite or water down the hole into the cylinder. You could do the same on the head but I would be concerned about getting the entire head wet with water and of all the places the little scotchbrite fibers would get into. Like the holes through the rocker arms.

No offense guys
John

+1000, Exactly what I was thinking. I mean the razor blade way is simple enough and takes like a minute or two.

I don't have to worry about getting anything in the cylinder. The head is off the jug and I replaced them. I normally use th scotch brite pad but haven't done it on a gasket like this. I wasn't sure if there was some trick.

Thanks for the input guys.
