Default Winter Project - Advice

This winter I'm planning on outfitting my 883L with some saddlebags and a Fairing for some touring and overnighters I hope to do in 2011.
Looking at one of the Batwing type Fairings from Memphis Shades etc.

But my real question is this .... I've been contemplating for the last 2 years to convert my 883 to a 1200/1250 cc just because ? Now with the Fairing and some hard saddlbags I'm not sure I'll have the $$$$$ for a conversion.

From what I've read a conversion won't really help for the Highway speeds unless I change out the gearing to one of a stock 1200.

I'm OK with the current power of the 883 and plan to do NO racing etc.
SO in this case is a 1200 conversion a waste of money and would I be better off spending money on a new set of PIPES instead of the slipons LOL

What are your priorities? It sounds like you're trying to make a bit of a touring bike out of your sporty, and if so, bags/fairing are the right priorities.

The upgrade will make a significant difference in performance, but also in fuel economy. If you have a small tank like I do on my Iron, that can be annoying! Others will say it doesn't make a diff bec you use less throttle at the same speed, but you'll still wind up twisting that throttle harder - your mileage will NOT improve, let's put it that way.

Nothing wrong with the slipons..

For what you're doing with it, keep the slip-ons and get the bags/fairings. The 1250 offers a bunch more power (50-60% more), true, and doesn't necessarily come with a mileage penalty, but if you don't really need more power, then there's no point to the expense. I don't know what you mean by "won't help for highway speeds" though. You will notice more power at all speeds, power you can feel. It won't lower your RPM at highway speed, though, unless you re-gear (simple sprocket change will do it), which you can do with the 883 as well. It all depends on what you want to do with it. Adding the fairing and bags will (obviously) add weight, which will hurt acceleration and other measures of performance, so in that light, it may necessitate the larger engine. On the other hand, a lot of people have successfully toured the Nation on bone-stock 883 motors. What do you want from your motor?

Didn't think about the added weight and fairing. LOL
I guess I should outfit the bike with the bags and fairing and see how it handles.
If I feel I need the upgrade to 1200/1250 we can cross that bridge when I get the cash LOL
Thanks

Just a question, but why a fairing and not a simple windshield? There is nothing wrong with an 883 for touring, just set your bike up for it and have at it. you can always do a 1200/1250 kit later if you feel like you need to.

+1 I would just go with a detatchable windshield. You may find at times you wish you didn't have that fairing on after you install it.

Loaded down for touring, the 883 will be a dog.
It'll still get up a hill, but the 1200 would be a crap-ton more fun.
I'm guessing you'll want the 1200.
