get what you want and/or what you can afford. If you can afford the 1200 buy it. Im not saying its only about money, but it may be a deciding factor. you can get an 883 for significantly less.
The 1200 obviously has more power. thats the only BIG difference. sure there are cosmetics and stuff that differ but basically, it boils down to how much you have to spend and/or how much power you want/or need.
For me it's all about the intended purpose and what modifications it takes to get there. If it's a simple question of Bike "A", with either engine "A" or engine "B", then all there is to decide is; How much power is enough.
If it's about an Iron 883 vs. a 1200C, or an 883 Superlow vs. a 1200 nightster, etc., then it's going to get into a lot of variables.
Side by side there is no noticeable difference from a 883 to 1200 without looking REALLY close. 883 will have lower insurance premiums and will get you from 0-70 in short notice. You've chosen a HD so speed and acceleration are not your first priorities obviously. Hell anybody that choses a v-twin has put performance down on their priorities list. You will get better fuel mileage on an 883. With that being said if i could have any HD it would be a Road King and maybe one day i will own one. I love my Sporty regardless.
By the way, I am comparing Sportster 883 low with Sportster 1200 low.
I would mainly use it for commute on a highway. Our regular highway speed is around 120km/hr so I would like to have a bike that can comfortably run on this speed and maybe a little more just to get out of tight situations.
I am ready to move up and I liked the Sporster. At this point, I cannot decide on which one to get, the 2011 883 or the 1200.
When I bought my 1200 I asked the same question. The sales guy said, "I've never had anyone who bought a 1200 wish they would have gotten the 883." That sold me on the 1200.
1200 all the way. Imean they make 883-1200 kits, but you don't see the 1200 to 883 kits LOL! The 1200 is more fun, will have better resale and will sell faster if you downgrade to a big twin LOL!
