Default Mom's first bike ?

Hey everyone, my mom is turning (mid 40's ) this year haha, and wants to get a bike of her own, which will be her first bike ever. I want to get some opinions on what would be a good bike for her. She is 5ft 5 and in good shape. She likes the new super low 883 but as it is a new model I do not know much about it. Thanks for your input

Matt

From reading the forums & reviews of the Superlow......I'd say it's just about the exact same as your Iron, but has Chrome and paint options other than black.

Oh, and of your mom!!!!!

mom is mid 40's?..sheet...i am old enough to be your grandad...but here's my 50cents

anyhow...a sporty is not bike for a raw rookie to ride IMHO....

many many new riders will roar around till the get passed the fear part to the fun part on 250 rebels ...

for 2-3000 grand you can buy rebel or zuki maruder and pretty much sell it for what paid for it..then move to HD..maybe a softail deluxe...nice seat height and weight dist..

i wish i had taken my advice i put my bride on 800 vulcan..it was too much bike for her and she never got over the fear....shudda stuck her on something that would have been really easy to muscle around and not worry about dropping it...

.

Great idea to get more information before buying. The SuperLow is the best starter bike HD has ever built. My wife (same age as your mom) just got one, herself (also her first bike). It's actually about the best riding Sportster ever, except for the low clearance (not much cornering). My wife is also 5'5", and fits wonderfully on the SuperLow. If your mom is stuck on HD, then I would suggest that she go to the dealer and sit on the various models, and see what fits her best.

Before buying a new bike, though, she really should get a small used bike for a year. This is to get used to riding, and to be sure that she will enjoy it. Once she is a more capable rider, then she can get a Harley if she wants.

With that being said, the SuperLow is a totally non-intimidating bike, and has so little power that it is easy to ride.

Not even close. The SuperLow has completely different suspension, wheels, tires, seat, tank, bars, etc. The only things the two share are the frame and engine.

Default Advice from a mom in her 40's

First if she doesn't have any experience riding, I recommend the MSF course so she can get some good basics under her belt. And she can learn without too much advice or laughter from her family.

Second, she needs to ride different bikes before she buys one. Good advice from others to ride a Rebel. For most guys a Sporty isn't a big intimidating bike. For someone with no experience it really is.

Last, let her decide what she wants. She needs to ride a few bikes before she buys something. Harley's, triumphs, metrics, etc. The reason so many bikes end up sitting in a garage is that the 883 that no one thinks is intimidating IS intimidating to a new rider.

Now for you, remember that your mom is gonna get a ton of attention for riding. My son says a little of that goes a long way for him. Plenty of guys older and younger than your mom are gonna thing she's a hot biker chick! Get ready!!

I say go with a Nightster, Iron, or 48. Great looking bikes, IMO.

The only thing with the Superlow is that the frame sits lower, I believe. I would hate for her to lay frame and not know what to do in a turn. Might not be an issue though, and I can honestly say that I have never ridden one personally.

And I agree, the class is SOOOO important!

The frame is less than 1/4" lower than the Iron, Nightster, etc. The issue is that the pegs are mounted stupidly, so you scrape them early. Remove the warning scrapers, and it's better, but you still scrape the pegs before you reach any kind of lean angle. As I said, my wife's first bike is a SuperLow, and she isn't intimidated by it at all. It is a very low, slow, and smooth bike, and the weight is well distributed. She can even pick it up by herself. It feels much smaller than it is. I've put a couple hundred miles on it, and except for the cornering issue and lack of power, I really like it, too.
