Default 2011 883 Iron vs 2011 883 Superlow for first bike?

First let me start off by saying thanks to everyone who helped convince me that the Superlow isn't a chick's bike. I love the way the Superlow looks but after doing more research I'm really really really starting the dig the Iron. The blacked out Iron looks amazing.

Since most of you guys are more experienced riders, which bike do you guys suggest for a first bike? Either bike would be great I think and both around the same price. I plan on riding to work as often as I can, probably doing the bike week stuff here in Florida and just local cruising and riding.

Basically choose what feels/looks best to you. I have the 883L and I'd prefer an Iron if I could do it all over.

The SuperLow has far superior seat and suspension, and a better gear ratio. It has slightly less cornering clearance due to the footpegs being a dropped design, but that is the only downside. The only other differences are strictly visual.

FIRST bike, or first harley?

for your first bike, I would recommend a 1980's era Yamaha Virago.

Ride that for a year then buy a harley.

You can find one for less than a grand in good shape. scuff it and rattlecan it flat black, strip all the chrome off, then next year you can sell it for more than you paid for it.

and if you drop it, no big deal.

I'm kinda of siding w/cameraboy w/this one...if it's your 1st m/c - get something to learn on & you won't mind damaging. Best to build a little proficiency & then move up. If not, then I say go to the dealership & test fit some bikes - see what feels right. I like the Iron, but that's me...plan to have one someday for short tripp'n.

After seeing some of the modded bikes out there. Part of me wonders if I should have gotten an Iron. I vote Iron.

I bought mysef an iron as my first bike and haven't looked back, but than again I am 21 so the seat and suspension don't really bother me ! So far I love the bike and have no complaints as I knew what I was getting into when I bought the HD over a r6, cbrr and so on. Comparing the iron and super low visually I think that iron looks so much better and I love the flat black paint job ! I use mine mostly for riding around locally but have used it to commute which for me is an 80 mile round trip all highway, and it handles it fine. Good luck on making your pick, either one im sure will make you happy !

Outstanding advice! However, it was not what you asked for. I say it is a toss up between the two you have selected. That suspension on the Iron can get old, though. (I'm 45)

The Iron is just a much better looking bike. You may even keep it longer because of that.

Ok, fair enough. not what the guy asked...

If you are insistent on spending 8 grand on your first bike, I would have to say that both bikes are very different, even though they are both sportsters.

My iron just feels right. The superlow, while nice and softer and all that, just doesn't feel right to me.

So, I would say sit on them both and if you can, ride them both and just get whatever one you like better. They feel completely different.
