I assume you are talking about one for your 2009 and not the early ironhead ones that were drop ins for the oil tank. But the round about answer is don't do it. It's your motor man. Why not put a fresh filter on there to keep the contaminates out of the oil instead of trying to be cheap.

Reusing oil filters is like reusing condoms... sure you may save a few bucks at first, but in the end you will just end up screwed.

seriously, a oil fliter costs what 17 bucks. a motor is 4 grand if not more. go right ahead, im sure you will regret doing it down the road. not for me, i change all three holes every 3500 miles. i dont care if the primary and trans oil comes out as clean as it went in. worth it to me...

Thanks, i've been thinking that. They say to clean it with karosen or carb cleaner, just not sure how well it would get clean. I'm kinda 35% i want 65% i dont.

What kind of filter you buying for $17 ? The filters from the dealer are about $6-$7.

Not a huge fan of carb cleaner, it can tend to be harsh on the internals.

LOL! I could not have said this better myself. Plus oil changes are messy as is-no need to make them worse.

+1 - and even though the OP didn't list which reusable filter he's looking at, most of the ones I've seen are $150+. With HD filters costing $8.00 (chrome) and changing your oil every 5,000 miles, you'd have to run the bike 90,000 miles just to break even on the cost. Not counting all the wasted time and mess cleaning the thing.

I worked at Jiffy Lube when I was a teenager and every once in a while someone would bring us in a reusable filter, ALWAYS more TROUBLE than they are worth. Granted that it was over ten years ago, maybe the technology has gotten better, I don't know. Based on my experience I would pay an extra couple of bucks not to have to clean it out.
