question blowing fuses fuel pump/ecm on 2009 Nightster
It was actually nice today and in the 50s and I broke out the Nightster to ride, but it won't start. It was running fine in the Fall, put it on the battery tender and Sta-bil in the tank, stored in my garage under cover for the winter. Today, turn the key, lights and display come on, so battery looks good, but fuel pump doesn't start up. I checked the fuses and no big deal, blown fuse on the fuel pump. After replacing it, try to start it again and same thing, it'll turn over but no gas. I check the fuses again, this time blown fuse on the ECM. Long story short, replaced multiple fuses, each time I flip the switch for the fuel pump it blows either the fuel pump or ecm fuse. I can't find any loose connections, ecm looks good, no bent pins or damage. My bike is a 2009 Nightster, any advice? Thanks.
Put in good fuses, then pull the system relay and try it again. If it still blows a fuse then you can rule out the fuel pump, the ignition coil and the injector circuits.
If it does not blow a fuse with the relay pulled, you've got it somewhat narrowed down to the components listed above or the harness (pinched wires or short to gnd) feeding from the relay to those components. Could even be the system relay itself, I would swap it with the starter relay to confirm.
I suppose its possible that one or more of the connectors or your fuse block are corroded.
That's a start anyway, with just a quick glance at the wire diagram, keep us posted.
