Default Steering Stop busted off, now what?

Hi Everyone! I'm a lady who bought my first bike last week. It's a 2004 Sporty XL and it's a fixer. Was dropped by the previous owner. Figured I'd buy it cheap and get my hands dirty and learn about the bike. The primary issue right now is that the steering stop is completely broken off on the right side. What are my alternatives Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! Here's a screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/eQVb1fZZKCJ

I suggest finding another lower tree and changing it out.

Congrats on your new scooter? You should be able to replace the tree or have it welded up. You have a good idea there, you get the bike cheap and get to find out all about your new baby. I suggest getting a shop manual for it, that thing is worth it's weight in gold. Post some pics when you can.

Shave both stops flat, tap the tree where they were and use some grade 8 or hardened 5/16" allen bolts for stops.

Thanks so much... I'm going to like this forum! How complicated is changing out the lower tree for a 1st time owner -- I've never worked on a bike before -- just changed out some easy things, oil changes, fluid changes, etc. Ready to get my hands dirty though! I like the idea of the bolts, seems easy, and a little easier on the pocketbook. I have to put new bars on it so that would probably be a good time. I also have a like-new set of silver tins to put on it. Bought them off someone who took them off their bike right off the showroom floor because they did a mod on it. I can't wait to put them on -- but definitely need that steering stop there first. That would bite to put on a new tank and well... I won't even go there. I bought the shop manual which is my new bible! My husband doesn't ride or know anything about bikes, so I'm flying solo here on this dream of mine. I would just fill the spot with JB weld, then drill it and do as mreed say's and put a bolt in as a stop.

Hi from a sunny Cape Town...Always cool to do the work yourself and you learn so much more about your ride.To do the work yourself make sure you got the manual,Not that its the be all of helpfulness but its got the main specs, torque values and how to's.Secondly check that you have all the tools you require Harley use some strange size hardware in the strangest places.
But i would go with the other guys that suggest if you can put in a stopper without removing the trees go for it.

Make friends at your local shop too, it will help when you need some advise on doing things to your baby. Check for bike nights around your area too, good place to meet like minded people, just don't forget to take your hubby with you.
