Default rear tire size question

I took my stock tires off of my 2010 48. I was working on my friends 94 Sportster 883 hugger the other day and noticed her rear tire is shot. Her tire is a D401 130/90 16 inch. My rear tire is a D401 150/80 16. I know it will be a lower and wider tire. Do you think I could put mine onto her bike, or would it be to wide? Figured I would ask before trying to find a new tire for her seeings mine are laying around collecting dust.

A 150 won't fit a 2003 or older Sporty. At least, not without some serious rework.

Thats what I figured, oh well, it was an idea. Thanks for the reply! I guess I start looking for the correct size tire for her!

Agreed. This would also be very dangerous to do. The MoCo changed the axles and swingarm in '05 (150 tire from '04 on).

Plus the rear wheel is not as wide on her bike and the side walls would be sucked in alot and that would throw off the contact patch of the tire.

Thanks for all the reply's! I wanted to hear the best answer here instead of the dealership! I guess I will be selling my stock tires off of my bike so I can find so extra cash to get her a set of tires! Gotta take care of a lovely woman in distress!

The tire on my 92 when I picked it up was a 150. No problems at all until I put lowering shakles on it. And then it only rubbed riding 2up.
I think I had to trim some fender bolts shorter, but cant remember for sure.

Here it is the way I bought it AFTER I installed the lowering shakles. It looks snug, but there was no rub....again, until I lowered it.
If you have the means, Id go ahead and get the correct size though. The Hugger may still be too low.

most 140/90/16 will work with no clearance issues.

some 150/80/16 will work with a couple washers to move the sprocket out just a tiny bit to provide belt clearance. The shift is small enough to not require any spacing on the tranny pulley.

So, it is not a bolt on mod but iffn ya have an idea of what is going on is doable.

Have to keep an eye on clearance r.e. bottom out. replacing fender bolts with carraige bolts with the smooth head on the inside will help.

Your tire itself may work but not the wheel. It depends on the actual width of the tire. I recently put on a Metzler ME880 150 tire on mine. There is a thread over at xlforum http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s...ad.php?t=15361 (hopefully there's no rules against posting links to that forum, if so mods feel free to remove it and I apologize). You will need a pulley spacer from vulcanworks.net to allow the belt to clear the tire and you'll need some 3/4" washers to allow the bolt heads that bolt the pulley to the wheel to clear the swing arm - for me I only needed one because the ones they had at the hardware store here were quite thick. You also may need to spread the swingarm slightly with a jack (I used a car scissor jack) to get it all to fit in, else you'll be fighting it to squeeze in those washers. Some people have to grind down the fender bolts/turn them the other way with the nut on the outside or use flatter head bolts to allow clearance but personally mine just made it but I'm only using the ones that hold the rear signals cause I won't be doing 2-up riding so that could be it also.

Also if I'm not mistaken the 150 will be a bit taller and not lower like you said so it'll fill out the fender a bit more.

I have pics of mine here and my bike is a 1999 which from my understanding should be the same frame and wheel dimensions as the '94. I totally prefer the look of the 150 - looks beefier and fills out the fender better. I'm also lowered on Burly shocks
