Help-I have a 97 Sporster 12oo XLH that is idling rough, spitting, missing, etc. I stopped by a motorcycle shop and the mechanic told me is is only getting good fire to front cylinder. I have changed plugs and wires, no difference. It seems to smooth out above 45 mph, but below 45 it cutting out, missing, etc. Mechanic showed me that you could touch the rear cylinder pipe and it was only warm where you can't touch the front cylinder pipe without getting burnt???
I'm an autobody repairer not a mechanic but if you have new plugs and wires then I would check the wiring connections and the coil.
Check for spark at the sparkplug also.
gas or spark is the only thing that you have to worry about. Id say its fuel not getting to that cylandir since youve replaced the plugs and wires. Check your low speed jet, could be some blockage (blow it out). Make sure your fuel line coming from the petcock is clear ect.

I don't know.... if you're getting fuel to the front cylinder... wouldn't you be getting it to the rear as well (single carb system)...
I won't say for sure this is your problem but I would try a new battery.I know it sounds nuts but all of the bikes I have had that didn't have spark or had weak spark on one cylinder were fixed with a new battery. The same thing worked for a few of my freinds as well. They had a hard time believing me at first. The battery can have enough current flow to crank the engine over but not enough voltage to fire the ignition properly. Those are two very different things as far as electrical component operation goes.
First things first -- check for spark. Pull the spark plug wire and stick an insulated screw driver into it leaving about a half inch from the metal. Crank the bike, and look for a aprk jumping from the plug wire to the screw driver.
Hey Guys, Thanks for the ideas, I decided to pull bottom of carb and removed and cleaned the low speed jet. After doing this it sounds and feels like my old bike again when cracking the throttle..I'll take her down the road tomorrow to make sure but I think I am back in business!!
