Did you put it up for the winter? If you did then did you treat the gas with stabilizer first? If not then I'd say you have some build up in the fuel lines/fuel system. It gets thick and turns to a glue like substance then gets hard like varnish. Someone recommended sea foam on another post and I have heard good things about it for fixing fuel issues.

if you're getting black smoke, the motor is getting too much gas. Might want to look for a puddle of gas at stop lights, the float valve may be sticking a little. Some seafoam is probably a good idea

Might still want to take apart that carb and clean it out with a little carb cleaner. Wouldn't hurt if the other stuff doesn't work.

taking the carb apart isn't hard at all. Actually, I usually just pull the bottom bowl off, four screws on a mikuni, and unscrew the jets and blow compressed air through all the holes and jets. It would give you a chance to adjust your float too.

oh yeah, check your air filter, and also make sure your choke is adjusted. I had the choke screw come undone one time so it was running half choked with the **** all the way in.

New crank sensor and intake seals solved the issues on my '05

Issues were:
1) difficult starting
2) poor idle (cold or warm)
3) sh!tty throttle response
4) popping with yellow flame (rear cyl)

Make sure your choke is off and the cable is not sticking.
